Augustine for the 21st Century

Recommended by Rev. Justin Taylor from "Between Two Worlds" . Here is just one piece of quote -

We benefit from reading great authors from eras past more than from reading a great number of books. In Christian theology and related fields, this means that we want to pick a handful of theologians who have influenced the church and make sure that we have read at least a little bit of what they wrote. If you are a seminarian, you want to read Irenaeus, Athanasius, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, and Barth, the towering figures in church history. (Frank Peretti is not a towering figure in church history.) In fact, you may want to choose one or two of these authors and read everything they’ve written, and read some of their books multiple times.

The City of God is one of those books. Its author, Augustine, over the course of his lifetime penned more than five million words which would become the backdrop for the next millennium of Western theological and philosophical thought. At the apex of his writings stands The City of God.

Read on from this link. You will find it's worth to read.

Christian as God-centered

Sin is horrible because it is an affront to God;
Salvation is wonderful because it brings glory to God;
Heaven is glorious because it is the place where God is all in all;
Hell is infernal because it is where God manifests His righteous wrath.
God is central to all of those truths.

We are enamored with God.
We are overwhelmed by His majesty, His holiness, and His grace.
We seek His glory, desire His presence, and model our lives after Him.

Jonathan Edwards said:
"The enjoyment of God is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of earthly friends, are but shadows; but God is the substance. These are but scattered beams, but God is the Sun. There are but streams, but God is the fountain. These are but drops, but God is the ocean."
